AFSP Walk

It was a beautiful fall day on Sunday, one where the sky is perfectly blue and the clouds are fluffy and light. The air was cool, but the sun warmed things up quickly. It was the perfect weather to connect with survivors, friends and supporters and walk to raise awareness.

As we have for the past several years (see last year's post), we walked in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's (AFSP) Out of the Darkness walk. The point of the walk is to unite those who are survivors (people who have survived the loss of family members/friends to suicide), as well as other community members, and walk to raise awareness of mental illness and suicide. I've mentioned in the past the stigmas associated with suicide and how so often people feel that they can't talk about it. We've got it all wrong; we must talk about it to everyone- to teens, middle aged adults, veterans ... everyone. The more we talk, the more help we can provide.

"...studies have consistently found that the overwhelming majority of people who die by suicide—90% or more—had a mental disorder at the time of their deaths. Often, however, these disorders had not been recognized, diagnosed, or adequately treated " (AFSP website). Many of these deaths could have been prevented, let's learn the warning signs & be more aware of how we can help ourselves and those around us.

If you need support for overwhelming feelings of doubt and depression, there is hope & help. Depression is not a character flaw or weakness, it is a disease. Click here for resources on where to get help.

Out of the Darkness

This past weekend, we were joined by family and friends to walk for a cause. Wrightsville Beach hosted their first "Out of the Darkness" walk in collaboration with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention http://www.afsp.org/. We were walking to bring awareness, raise money for research and remember those whose lives were ended too early. We feel strongly about this cause and want to encourage people to begin talking about suicide. In 2008, Will's mom took her life. From that day forward, we have vowed as a couple & as a family to help others and find anyway to prevent another suicide.

The weather was perfect & we were astounded by how many people came out. Wilmington, as a community, raised over $42,000 which was incredible! We were thankful to be a part of the first (annual) walk & so appreciative for friends and family that traveled long distances to join us.

My first attempt at a panorama shot on my iphone.. kind of worked? But it shows the crowd!

Walking for sweet Kim

The whole Cooper crew, including Will's aunt

Love all these men

Blessed to have friends that drive down for the day to walk with us

We will not be silent.

I came across this awesome book trailer while reading a blog earlier. It explains the struggles of a woman suffering with depression and her husband as he stayed faithful to her.

What a wonderful story of hope and love; as well as a great reminder to all of us that we must continue to bring light to mental illness. It is my hope that we can be bold and talk to anyone and everyone about this cause. I believe that through awareness, there is hope for others. Therefore, we will choose to not be silent.
